The Hamburger Morgenpost is the second largest newspaper in Hamburg. The Hamburger Morgenpost was founded in 1949 by the Hamburg section of the Social Democratic Party and sold due to financial problems in the 1970s. After several owners, the publishing company Gruner + Jahr bought it in 1986, and sold the newspaper in 1999 to Hans Barlach. In 2006, the BV Deutsche Zeitungsholding, a company of David Montgomery's Mecom Group and Veronis Suhler Stevenson International, bought the newspaper.
