It is North-East India's second oldest English-language daily started as a tabloid-sized weekly on August 10, 1945, on a treadle machine in Shillong. S. B. Chaudhuri was its founding editor and proprietor. Parsva Nath Chaudhuri bought the newspaper and the press in 1961, and also took over as editor. Following his death on April 1, 1978, his youngest son Manas Chaudhuri took over the management of the paper. The Shillong Times switched to modern computer typesetting and offset printing technique on August 15, 1991 and the first issue in broadsheet format came into being. |
