It was founded as a resistance paper during World War II (the name means "The Password" or "The Motto") by Frans Goedhart and Jaap Nunes Vaz (born in Amsterdam 20 September 1906). Nunes Vaz was arrested by the Gestapo on 25 October 1942 and sent to Sobibor concentration camp. Until January 1, 2003, Het Parool was part of PCM Uitgevers NV, a publishing company which is the owner of De Volkskrant, NRC Handelsblad, Algemeen Dagblad, and Trouw. Its main shareholders today are Stichting Het Parool and the Belgium based De Persgroep, owned by Christian van Thillo. The rest of the shares are owned by its own personnel. The newspaper changed from broadsheet to tabloid on March 31, 2004. Its daily circulation is about 89,000 copies.
