The Whangarei Comet and Northern Advertiser was founded in 1875 as a weekly paper by George Edwin Alderton and, despite a small population which lead to predictions the paper would "would go up like a comet, and come down like a stick", the paper flourished and within two years had expanded to 12 pages and become the Northern Advocate and General Advertiser, with a small section printed in Maori. The paper began daily publication in 1902. The paper was created by the previous owners, Independent Newspapers Limited (INL, 49% owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Limited), from an amalgamation of two Whangarei broadsheet newspapers, The Dominion (morning, commenced Dominion Day, 26 September 1907) and The Evening Post (commenced 1865), in July 2002. INL sold the paper and all other New Zealand newspapers and most magazines in its stable to Fairfax in 2003.
